LawyerLocate.ca member and Canadian lawyer Andrew Feldstein recently launched It’s Time for Justice, a six-edition series of downloadable White Papers on the need for immediate change in the Canadian family law system. Specifically, Mr. Feldstein is calling attention to the need for Canadian couples to be able to separate and divorce quickly, efficiently and at less cost. This will result in less stress for everyone involved including spouses, partners and children.
In Canada, 38% of people will experience separation and divorce at some point in their life; however, almost all of us have been directly or indirectly affected in one way or another. It’s Time For Justice was created to affect change.
“For 20 years, we have been talking about improving access to justice in Canada and we have made barely any progress. The time for talk is past. The time for action is now,” says Mr. Feldstein.
Mr. Feldstein points out that the change must come at the legislative end, on Parliament Hill and at Queen’s Park. Lawyers, judges, and citizens abide by laws set by Canada’s government; those laws need to be changed to make family law less bureaucratic and more efficient.
“In It’s Time For Justice, I ask the politicians responsible for divorce law to recognize their obligations to all Canadians,” says Mr. Feldstein.
Here are some of the highlights from the first edition of It’s Time For Justice:
- Family law problems, including obvious roadblocks to family law justice
- What access to justice means
- The role of politicians and journalists in affecting change
- The difference between separation and divorce
- Family law solutions including legal costs and access to justice
